2013 BMW X1

The BMW X1 is the entry point to BMW's SUV lineup in the US: a subcompact luxury crossover that seats five and competes with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLB, and Volvo XC40. It arrived in the US for the 2013 model year as an unusually low, wagon-like crossover built on rear-wheel-drive 3 Series underpinnings, then transitioned in 2016 to a more conventional, space-efficient SUV shape on a front-wheel-drive-based platform.

Across its generations the X1 has been praised for handling that is sharper than most rivals, punchy turbocharged four-cylinder engines, and a cargo area that is generous for the segment. It appeals to shoppers who want a BMW badge and driving feel at the brand's lowest SUV price point, including young professionals and small families stepping into the luxury market. The current 2023+ generation adds more rear-seat room, standard all-wheel drive, and a modern curved-display infotainment system.

The 2013 model: Although the E84 X1 launched globally in 2009, it did not reach the US until fall 2012 as a 2013 model, arriving in already-facelifted form. Unlike later X1s, it was built on a rear-wheel-drive platform shared with the contemporary 3 Series, giving it a lower, wagon-like stance and sportier handling character. US buyers could choose the sDrive28i (RWD) or xDrive28i (AWD) with a 240-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, or the xDrive35i with a 300-hp turbocharged inline-six.
