About the Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma is a midsize pickup truck that replaced the Hilux-derived Toyota Pickup in the United States for the 1995 model year and has been sold continuously since. Built on a body-on-frame chassis with rear- or four-wheel drive, it has been offered over its life in regular-cab, extended-cab (Xtracab, Access Cab, XtraCab), and crew-cab (Double Cab) configurations with multiple bed lengths, spanning basic work trucks to dedicated off-road models.

The Tacoma has long been the sales leader in its segment, ranking as the best-selling midsize pickup in the US for most of the 2005-2023 period, and it competes with the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Nissan Frontier. Its reputation rests on durability, off-road capability, and strong resale value. Typical buyers range from off-road and overlanding enthusiasts drawn to TRD variants to shoppers who want a right-sized, long-lasting truck for work and recreation.

The 2019 model: The third generation kept the familiar body-on-frame formula but used more high-strength steel in the frame and introduced a 278-hp 3.5L V6 with a six-speed automatic (a six-speed manual remained available on some V6 4x4 trims), while the 159-hp 2.7L four continued as the base engine. Trims spanned SR and SR5 through TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro, and a 2020 refresh added updated infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Throughout this era the Tacoma remained the best-selling midsize pickup in the US.

  • Midsize pickup offered in extended-cab and crew-cab (Double Cab) body styles; regular cab available in earlier generations
  • Double Cab models seat five; extended-cab models seat fewer (the 2024+ XtraCab is a two-seater)
  • Rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive throughout its run; 2WD PreRunner models paired 4x4 styling and ride height with RWD
  • Powertrains have ranged from four-cylinder and V6 gas engines to the current 2.4L turbo four and i-Force Max hybrid
  • Deep off-road lineage: PreRunner, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter variants
  • Consistently the best-selling midsize pickup in the US and known for strong resale value
